Jim and Mike Caron Claim Parent/Child Championship

Vassalboro — Jim and Mike Caron made the most of their return to Natanis Golf Course for this year’s MSGA Parent/Child Championship, claiming the same title they first won two years ago at the same venue. The duo shot 74 in the difficult alternate shot format to edge out the team of Richard and Jason Campbell by one stroke for the overall title.

Jim (Gorham CC) and Mike (Biddeford-Saco CC) got off to a rocky start with bogeys at the first two holes, but got things back quickly with a birdie on 3 and an eagle on 4. After a double bogey on 8, they played steady the rest of the way and had their score of +2 hold up as the rest of the field came in.

Formerly called the Father/Son Championship, this marked the first year that included players of both genders in the event.  “It was great to see the young female players out there enjoying the tournament with their parents today,” says Mike Doran of the MSGA. “This tournament is a great day for parents and kids alike to come out and play golf in a true team format. It’s a competition, sure, but at the same time most of the players out here today were just out to enjoy the game and the company of their family.”

In the 15-18 year old flight, Jonathan and Kyle Nicholson (Kebo Valley GC) successfully defended their win from last year in this flight with a score of 76. They beat out second place finishers Michael Pelletier and Cohen Donnell.

In the 14 & under flight, Harry Haylock and daughter Ruby (Turner Highlands GC) won by one shot with a score of 81. The runners-up were Adam and Alden Griffiths and Jon and Bennett Berg, who both carded 82.

This marked the 23rd time that Natanis GC has hosted the Parent/Child Championship since its inception in 1957.
